General terms used for quick connect/disconnect couplers

Hydraulic Symbol Quick Release Coupling Connected Position

Brinelling

Named after the Brinell scale of hardness. Brinelling is a process of wear in which similar marks are pressed into the surface of a moving part. Brinelling in quick couplers occurs when indentations are made by the locking balls on the locking ball groove area of the male couplers they are in contact with, primarily in high impulse applications.

Burst Pressure

Is sometimes defined as the point at which something such as a valve or hose will fail as a result of pressure.

Disconnection and Connection Force

Value of force required to connect the couplings without residual pressure in the system.

Female

Female coupling half uncoupled, can also be known as the carrier.

Male

Male coupling half uncoupled, also known as nipple, plug or probe.

Male/Female Coupled

Male coupling half connected with the female coupling half.  Many terms exist for quick release couplings, such as: Quick connect, Quick disconnect (QD), Quick couplers, Quick connector, Quick couplings, Quick release coupling (QRC).

Interchangeability

Male or female couplings ability to connect with the other brands of couplings.

ISO Size

Size indicated by ISO standard (the International Organization for Standardization) related to interchangeability of the couplings.

Maximum Operating Pressure

The maximum pressure at which a product can be used.

Maximum Residual Pressure During Connection

Maximum allowed residual pressure (pressure trapped in the circuit) to connect the coupler.

Maximum Residual Pressure During Disconnection

Maximum residual pressure trapped in the circuit where the coupler is allowed to disconnect.

Pressure Drop

Also known as Delta-P.  This measures the pressure lost between the inlet and outlet of the coupling.

Rated Flow

Rated flow relative to the size of coupler, in accordance with ISO 7241-2 standard.

Size

Nominal size of coupling body.

Spillage

Indicative value of the fluid loss per couple - uncouple cycle without residual pressure.

Temperature Range

Temperature range within which the product can be used.
